First place. That’s where the Whitman girls basketball team finds itself after downing rival Northport, 52-46, Tuesday.
Wildcats senior Kelly Bilodeau, a four-year varsity standout, led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds as Whitman (13-2, 9-1) took sole possession of first place in Suffolk League II.
The Tigers (11-3, 8-2) trail by one game with three to play. Northport hits the road to face Central Islip Friday at 6:15 p.m.
The teams took a tie at 20 into intermission, but Whitman took control with a 15-9 third quarter.
Senior Katira Jemmott had 10 points while Essence Casey (8 points) and Marissa Olsen (6 points) contributed in the win. It also avenged Whitman’s lone league loss, 61-50, to Northport Jan. 4.
This was the final game in the month-long Coaches vs. Cancer series. Wildcat Booster Club president Donna Grennan said Tuesday’s game netted $1,500 for the cause.
