Think Pink - Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As a chef and business owner, I am using my body to do most of my work. I used to work in architecture where I used my brain more than my body. Now, I am on my feet, run around lifting & moving things and chopping, cleaning and transferring food from the raw to the cooked. I work right alongside men in both careers and I seem to be able to keep up. I saw a pink ribbon the other day and realized that it was breast cancer awareness month and started to reflect on the fact that I am a woman.

I am a woman who wants to do good with my work and my life. When working in the industries I have, I sort of forget my gender and just try to do the best job. But gender is real and there is a difference between us.

I have two waitresses that go to Stony Brook University for Nursing, and a third who is going to be pursuing nursing also. They get to go to hospitals and work with real patients as part of their study. Recently they got to go into the maternity ward and I got to hear stories of the new mothers and babies. I had my daughter with a midwife and she took to the breast instantly. It was the best thing I could have done for her. She is a healthy, tenacious 2-year old now, and I am so proud to have her in my life. So I decided I wanted to do something to celebrate being a woman and give my support to those who have gotten sick. Our health is the most important thing! So I developed something called Pink Pumpkin Soup.

Its a soup that is a blend of butternut squash and pumpkin made with toasted sage and agave nectar. I added a few drops of red food coloring to make the pink effect a little stronger, but its delicious and very seasonally appropriate! I have offered to give $1 of every soup sale to the Stony Brook Breast Cancer Research facility. This will continue every day through the end of October.
