Voter's Guide: Northport, Elwood School Budget, Board Election

Northport School District residents will vote on the district’s $159 million proposed budget for the 2014-15 school year on Tuesday.

The proposal calls for a 1.6 percent increase in spending over the current year and carries a 1.99 percent percent tax levy increase, which is within the state's tax cap.

School officials say that there will be a slight reduction in staffing because of an anticipated decline in enrollment. Still, the proposed budget preserves all programs and services currently offered, school officials say. Four candidates are running for three school board seats. Incumbent Jennifer Thompso, Donna McNaughton, Regina Pisacani and Brian Salisbury are on the ballot; Tammie Topel, an incumbent, is running as a write-in candidate, Newsday has reported.

Voting will be held from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Fifth Avenue Elementary and Dickinson Avenue Elementary schools and the William J. Brosnan School administrative offices. Find polling information and district's budget newsletter here.

Elwood

Elwood School District residents will vote on the district’s $59 million proposed budget for the 2014-15 school year on Tuesday.

The proposal calls for a 2.8 percent increase in spending over the current year and carries a 1.41 percent percent tax levy increase, which is within the state's tax cap.

School officials say that the fiscal plan allows them to maintain programs and program enhancements.

In this by-seat election, incumbant Michael LaMena is running unopposed; Julia Fried is running unopposed for the seat of incumbent William Gutekunst, who is not running this year.

Voting will be held 2 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at Elwood Middle School. Find polling information and more about the district's budget here.
