Sunday at the Society -- The Wreck of the Gwendoline Steers

This December marks the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the tugboat Gwendoline Steers at the mouth of Huntington Bay; a tragedy that cost the lives of nine men. Beginning at 3 p.m. on September 9th, Northport Historical Society will host "The Wreck of the Gwendoline Steers," a PowerPoint presentation by Gerard Thornton. Mr. Thornton is the owner of a New York tugboat company and has captained ships throughout the area's waterways for over 20 years. His presentation was created with the help of Steve Knox, the son of one of the lost crewmen, and local history author Edward Carr and is part of an effort to memorialize the sinking of the tug with an eye toward a 50th anniversary memorial service. This event is free for Northport Historical Society members; a $5 donation is requested from non-members. Light refreshments will be served.
