Elwood Teacher Scores Toshiba Tech Grant for Students

Students take on computer-aided manufacturing to design and create toys with grant-funded technology.

Matthew McGuire, a technology teacher at Elwood Middle School was recognized recently for his effort in securing a grant for his technology students to use in studying design fabrication.

McGuire received the grant last year from the Toshiba American Foundation to purchase equipment for his classes.

For his work  he was recently acknowledged in the national publication “Tech & Learning.” The article, written by Ellen Ullman in the June 25 issue, was titled “What to Do with It – Best Practices from Grant-Winning Districts.”

With the grant he secured, McGuire has taught his students how to use computer-aided manufacturing and a computer numerical control router system to design and manufacture toys that are later donated to local children. 

In addition, McGuire volunteered much of his time over the summer to help convert a technology room at the middle school into a STEM room.

“Mr. McGuire is an incredible asset to the middle school staff. He is a quality educator who has contributed so much to our program for the students’ benefit,” Principal Hugh Gigante said in a press statement.

At the latest school board meeting, McGuire gave a brief overview of what he has in store for his students this year, including building maglev model vehicles and constructing projects using snap circuit electronic kits.
