Elwood Achievers: Academics, Arts and Athletics

A roundup of outstanding athletic achievements and recent happenings in the Elwood school district

The Elwood School Board honored student achievement in athletics, 

The after defeating Harborfields at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue in early March, was honored.  Team members include: Olivia Corso, Monica Eugene, Danielle Evers, Meaghan Haber, Emma Klis, Allison McKenna, Rachel Miller, Lindsey Moorehead, Mackenzie Sivilli, Monika Sivilli, and Nia Williams. 

Joseph Giaramita, Kenneth Meinsen, and James Dekrone were recognized for their outstanding achievements in wrestling. The three were named at Stony Brook University – the most of any school in Suffolk County.

Kaitlin Whitehorn was recognized as well for accomplishing a first for Elwood -- earning the title of Overall County Champ in the High Jump.

Athletes were not the only achievers to be recognized. Senior John Linitz, who has been involved in mentoring for the past three years, received the Mentoring Achievement Award from the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island. He is the first peer mentor ever to receive the honor. In addition, the Partnership also awarded $500 to John Glenn High School in John’s name.

 Elwood Middle School Honor Society members traveled Albany with advisor Diane Locascio to interact with representatives for the day. They sat in on senate and assembly sessions, and were welcomed by Senator Carl Marcellino.

Boyd fourth and fifth grade choral students performed at the board meeting, as well. They are: Valerie Alfaro, Ariana Aquino, Elizabeth Choi, Sabrina Emmerich, Hannah Lochan, Patrick Marino, Shannon O’Brien, Abigail Reinold, Meghan Rivardo, Mia Sansanelli, Ashlyn Umbach, Matthew Verlotte, Matthew Comeau, Sophia Fleischer, Katelyn Kaplan, Emma Koster, Andi Landsberg, Alexandra Madden, Alison McLuckie, Ashley Mullan, Emily Olusky, Jeffrey Roizman, Robert Saxer, Alexandria Spelman, Stephanie Tsangaris, Alexandra Vallejos, Jessica Riley-Weinberg, and Kristen Yeisley. 

Members of the Boyd string ensemble also performed. They are: Jessica Weinberg, Jonathan Green, Jeffrey Roizman, Emily Lepore, Chrisoula Moraitis, Yeji Lee, Gabriel Park, James Paik, Annie Song, Ione Henriksen, Lotina Pierre, Terrence Sheldon, Matthew Liu, Natalie Quijano, Cameron Toy, and Madison Mullman.

Special recognition was also given to Janet Gromada, who has continued as a volunteer administrative intern at Boyd Intermediate School even though her assignment was completed in December.
