Early Dismissal for Northport Students

Nor'easter brings high winds, snow on first day back to school after Sandy.

Northport-East Northport School District students living in Asharoken and Eatons Neck were dismissed early Wednesday, according to a source, as a Nor'easter brought the first blustery snowstorm of the season.

Superintendent Marylou McDermott reopened schools after assessing bus routes and stops. Some bus stop changes were made, and school went on as usual.

"Many parents are uspet that the decision to open school today did not take into account the fact that the already compromised shoreline was susceptible to flooding and it put the students at risk," wrote the source.

"Many people are still without power/heat, gas lines are still long and the impending storm caused most surrounding districts to remain closed until Thursday. At the very least Dr. McDermott should have advised people of the situation yesterday."
