Northport Handles Blizzard With Aplomb

Northport residents and officials clear the roads and have some fun in the process.

The first blizzard of the winter left with more than a foot of snow.  The , and according to the National Weather Service, 13.9 inches of snow was measured in East Northport at 7:20 a.m. Monday morning. While these numbers sound daunting, Northport has been handling the storm successfully.

Town of Huntington and Northport Village employees were out in force throughout the storm and all day Monday. Northport Police Chief Eric Bruckenthal said:  "As of 3 p.m. [Monday], there have been no significant incidents related to the weather from a police point of view." 

 superintendent Tim Drew was unavailable for comment as he and his workers were out on the roads.

By now, most of the snow has been cleared, however drivers on the road are still driving slowly and carefully.  While clearing the snow took up most of Northport's time, its residents were able to enjoy the weather as well.

was the rule of the day. One of the biggest attractions in Northport during a snowstorm is the steep hill on Valley Road. Locals flocked there to go sledding. It's located just  off of Ocean Avenue and is in a perfectly safe location away from traffic. To help ensure no car-sledder collisions, the Northport Highway Department closed off the road with barricades.

Local businesses were able to continue their services to the townspeople without any setbacks. Artie Berke, owner of on Main St., said: "We woke up extra early and shoveled the snow outside. That was our biggest battle.  Once we cleared the front, and customers saw we were open, they all started coming in."

Other residents of Northport were out walking their dogs, shoveling their driveways and clearing snow off their cars. The weather for this week is going to be mostly sunny, slowly warming up to the mid-high 30s.
