Insects carrying West Nile virus found in East Northport, Huntington

Suffolk County said Friday that more mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus have been found in the area.

Between Sept.4-7, sampling found infections in mosquitoes in Huntington (1), East Northport (1), and another 8 in other parts of the county.

To date this year, 158 mosquito samples and four birds have tested positive for West Nile virus. No humans or horses have tested positive for the virus in Suffolk County this year.

West Nile virus, first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999 and again each year thereafter through 2012, is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.
