It Takes a Village, And More, to Make Asharoken Fireworks Show Happen

Officer-in-charge Ray Mahdesian details the law enforcement helping the event go off safely.

Asharoken Officer in Charge Ray Mahdesian told the Board of Trustees that the police department is prepared for the 4th of July fireworks.
But he said, the department does not do it alone.

"A lot of our time is spent in preparation," he said. "And we receive a lot of assistance. The main focus is safety."

The Northport police and fire departments, the East Northport Fire Department and the Town of Huntington Department of Public Safety will assist or be on standby, he said.

Mahdesian noted that police costs would be the same whether or not the fireworks display took place.

"One the fourth of July, before we had fireworks, was almost out of hand," he said. "We had absolute riots, bonfires, drunks, accidents, what have you. So we are at full staffing every 4th of July. The fireworks are something we take in stride," he said.
