Northport Police: Smashing Pumpkins, Stolen Campaign Signs, Youths Horseplaying

All this and more happened the week ending Monday, Nov. 1.

A caller reported to police group of ten youths fighting at Seaview and Scudder aveues Sunday, Oct. 31 at 8:38 p.m. Officers Christopher Hughes and Jon-Todd Herfurth responded and determined that the youths were merely horseplaying. The group was dispersed without incident.

A caller reported caution tape tied across the roadway at Lisa Drive and Blydenburgh Court Sunday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. Detective Peter Hayes responded and removed the tape.

Northport police Sergeant Thomas Schramm observed a boat in Northport Harbor dragging its mooring Sunday, Oct. 31 at 5:30 p.m. The owner, a Garfield Street, Northport, resident was notified.

A Sea Cove Road resident called police Sunday at 8:20 a.m. that Halloween decorations had been relocated and pumpkins damaged at their home. The resident stated the incident occurred after midnight and that he was able to retrieve all of the decorations ecept a green head with independently moving eyes. The complainant requested the incident be documented in case the missing decorations were located. At 9:11 a.m., police received a phone call from a Seaview Terrace resident stating that someone had placed Halloween decorations in their yard that did not belong to them. Officer Rob Ramonetti responded and retrieved those deocorations and found that some of them belonged to the Sea Cove Road caller. The rest were stored in the rear of headquarters awaiting the owners to identify and claim.

Police received a call Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1:11 a.m. reporting a loud party at an Oak Street home. Officers Steven Golub and Alan Bakker responded and spoke to the party host who said she would bring down the noise level of the party. There were no further complaints.

Police received an anonymous call Saturday, Oct. 30 at 11:43 p.m. reporting that two males were removing political campaign yard signs from a Maple Avenue home. The caller said the two males put the signs in to a 1992 Buick and fled down Main Street. The caller had recorded the license plate number. A check of the Department of Motor Vehicles database provided an address of Beach Avenue. Officers Steven Golub and Alan Bakker contacted the vehicle owner who stated her 17-year-old son was operating the car. She contacted her son and he agreed to go back to the Maple Avenue location to speak with the officers. Upon arrival, her son and a Wheeler Place man removed campaign signs for Congressman Steve Israel, Senator John Flanagan and Assemblyman Andrew Raia. The pair said they took the signs because they thought it would be funny. Police warned and admonished the men, advising them that their actions were criminal.

A Rutledge Avenue resident contacted police Saturday, Oct. 30 at 9:07 p.m. to report that numerous subjects were outside the complainant's home and spraying shaving cream on the front door of the residence. Officers Golub and Bakker responded and the resident stated he thought the incident was related to Halloween and that he is satisfied filing a report for informational purposes.

While on patrol Friday, Oct. 29 at 5:14 p.m, officer Tom Endee was flagged down by School Sreet at Fifth Avenue and advised of a an injured goose nearby. The animal was secured in a dog cage and was released to a wildlife rehabilitator for evaluation.

An employee of the Harborview Gallery on Main Street called police Friday, Oct. 29 at 5:12 p.m. to report youths on the roof, an ongoing problem. Officer Tom Endee responded and upon his arrival the youths had dispersed.

A Jay Court resident called police Friday, Oct. 29 at 1:48 p.m. to report several cars parked illegally on Dogwood Road during the Ocean Avenue Elementary School Halloween parade. Officer Endee responded and issued summonses to two vehicles.

A Hilton Avenue resident came into police headquarters Thursday, Oct. 28 at 5:13 p.m. to report a man that when her daughter got off the bus the day before near Garfield Street, a white four-door vehicle slowed down after passing her daughter and then backed up, creating alarm. Officer Endee canvassed the area to no avail.

An anonymous caller reported Thursday, Oct. 28 at 10:13 a.m. that a man was walking around Main Street mumbling and carrying a knife. Officer Endee and Officer Peter Howard responded and found the subject who said he was looking for his cat as the cat was late for breakfast.

An employee  of Country Tobacco on Fort Salonga Road called police Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 2:41 p.m. to report a man urinating on his property. Officer Howard responded and admonished and warned the urinator.

Police received a call Monday at 10:12 a.m. reporting that a 26-foot 1978 boat was taking on water. The owner, an Asharoken Avenue man, was notified.
