Northport Police Report: Hit and Run, DWI, Driving on Drugs

Arrests, Aug. 10-15.

The following was taken from the crime blotter. An arrest does not indicate a conviction as all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Man Arrested for Hit and Run with Multiple Suspensions

Henry Rogers, 28, of Northport was arrested in Northport on Aug. 10 and charged with leaving the scene of an incident, passing on the left, unlicensed operation, second degree aggravated unlicensed operation, and no/expired insurance.

Rogers allegedly passed two vehicles on the left on Ocean Avenue, hit one of the vehicles attempting to make a left turn, and left the scene. A witness attempted to follow Rogers but could not keep up. A police officer and Detective Hayes responded to Rogers' house where a car was reportedly located with damage consistent with the crash.

Rogers was found to have a suspended license (11 times on 3 dates) and was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters for processing. He was arraigned by Judge Senzer and release on his own recognizance due to return on Aug. 13.

Man Arrested for Driving on Drugs Could Not Explain Car Damage, Was Unaware of Whereabouts

Timothy Sweeney, 45, of Huntington was arrested in Northport on Aug. 13 around 12:13 a.m. and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, driving with a headlight out, and an unsafe lane change.

Sweeney was allegedly observed driving westbound on fort Salonga Road with a headlight out. A police officer following him said that Sweeney was swerving in between lanes, struck the curb twice, and was following too closely to the vehicle in front of him.

The officer pulled Sweeney over and said that his speech was slurred, his facial expressions distorted, he was unaware of his whereabouts, and he fell asleep during the traffic stop. He was also driving barefoot and couldn't explain where his shoes were, according to the officer, and when asked about the front end damage to his vehicle he seemed unaware of any damage to his car.

When he exited the car he was unsteady on his feet and he almost walked into the roadway numerous times. Sweeney performed poorly on several field sobriety tests and was arrested and transported to headquarters for processing where he consented to a blood test. The officer delivered the kit to Suffolk County Crime lab for analysis.

Man Arrested for Three Outstanding Warrants

Peter Kraus, 24, was arrested by SCPD Gang Unit #24 on Aug. 14 and transported to Northport Police Headquarters on 3 active NPVJ Court Warrants. He was processed, and brought before Judge Senzer. He was unable to make bail and transported to Riverhead Jail.

Man Arrested for DWI, Hit and Run

James Ritchie, 53, of Asharoken was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an incident, and unlicensed operation on Aug. 15 at 2:53 a.m.

Police responded to Waterside Road to assist Suffolk County Police with an accident investigation. Ritchie had allegedly struck a parked and unattended Honda on Ocean Avenue and left the area. Several parts of the defendant's vehicle were located at the accident scene.

According to police, Ritchie was unsteady on his feet, his movements were uncoordinated when asked to exit his vehicle, and he performed poorly on several field sobriety tests. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, and transported to Headquarters where he refused an intoxilyzer exam, processed and held for arraignment.
