Crimes Nearby: Woman Found Dead in Nature Preserve

HUNTINGTON

Suffolk County Police have identified the woman who was found in the woods at the Froehlich Nature Preserve Thursday morning as Sarah Strobel, 23, of Huntington Station. Her body was found in the nature preserve in Huntington Thursday morning. 

Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick said a passerby in the preserve found the body of the white woman about 8:50 a.m. about 300 feet into the woods. He deemed her death suspicious. She was found near one of the trails that winds through the preserve.

KINGS PARK

Peter Higgins, 24, of Smithtown, was arrested on Sept. 25 in Kings Park and faces one felony charge of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. Police said Higgins sold jewelry reported stolen after a burglary to Suffolk Jewelry Traders for more than $1,000 cash.

COMMACK

Police say a woman shopping at Target rode away in a motorized cart she stole from the Commack store.  

According to Target’s video footage, the woman drove the shopping cart out of the store and into the parking lot of the Target store, located at 98 Veterans Memorial Highway, Sept. 26 at approximately 2 p.m. The suspect is described as white, in her late 20s to early 30s, with long blonde hair past her shoulders. She was wearing a zippered hoodie, a dark hat and sunglasses.

HAUPPAUGE

A Hauppauge man was arrested Thursday after he crashed his car on New Highway and then fled the scene as police were attempting to apprehend him for striking two vehicles on the Northern State Parkway, State Police said. 

According to police, Peter Mackoul, 31, was driving a 2013 BMW eastbound on the Northern State near Exit 46 at a "high rate of speed" when his car made contact with two other vehicles on the parkway. He was later caught after he crashed his car on New Highway in Hauppauge and fled the scene on foot.
