Northport Youth Football: Oct. 6-7

Northport Youth Football Game Recaps and Scores, Oct. 6-7

5/6 yr old Black

Tigers 28 Hills Pride 7
the final score of this game was hardly an indication of how tight this game was. The score was tied at 7 after the first half due to great play by Quinn Reynolds and Brady Cooke. They were all over the field on the defensive side of the ball. The Tigers relied on their depth in the 2nd half to spell a tired Tiger unit. Tough running by Danny DeMarco set up a touchdown run early in the 4th quarter to win the game for the Tigers. They went on to tack on 2 more touchdowns later in the quarter by taking advantage of a tired Pride team.

Tigers 6 vs. Lynvets Colonials 18
On a muddy field in Shirley the Tigers quest for a perfect season came to an end. After turning the ball over on their first offensive series the Colonials struck quickly for a touchdown. The Tigers then had a long, methodical drive that resulted in a 15 yard touchdown run by Michael Meyer. The Colonials marched right back up the field and took a 12-6 lead at the half.  They added another score to put the game out of reach for the Tigers. The Tigers hardly quit in this game, they simply couldn't get it together. An early drive stalled out on a turnover. Their defense stepped up by getting physical and forcing fumbles.   Kudos to this team for never giving up and showing true grit in an adverse situation.

Tigers 12 vs. Amityville 26

The Tigers had two long drives in the first half resulting in touchdowns, one lasting the entire first quarter capped by a touchdown by quarterback Tommy Fitzgerald to open the second quarter.  Both drives were hi-lighted by tough, inside running of Fullback Vinnie Bruno.  The second of the two drives ended in a touchdown by Halfback Andrew Argyris.  Unfortunately though, the Tigers offense then stalled and the defense couldn't contain Amityville's tremendous over all team speed as they ran off 26 straight points.  The Tigers never gave up however, fighting each play and for every yard until the final whistle.

Tigers 19 vs. North Shore 31

The Tigers four game winning streak came to an end Sunday with a 31-19 loss to a tough North Shore team in a cold, rainy, muddy day at Northport HS Field. The Colts of North Shore came out strong scoring on their first two possessions to take a 12-0 lead. The Tigers cut the lead to 12-6 at the end of the first quarter with a long drive capped off by Luke Rizzo’s 35 yard TD run. The TD was set up by nice runs by Jacob Starcke & Nicholas DeMarco.

The second quarter was a back and forth battle of great offensive plays with the Colts scoring twice and the Tigers responding each time. After North Shore went up 18-6 on a long TD run, Luke Rizzo – behind solid blocking of Bettano, Dowd, Fiorino, Fernandez, Tittmann & Jolly - busted a 60 yard run around left end to cut the score to 18-12. The Colts quickly scored once more to take a 24-12 lead, but Rizzo broke free again (this time for a 70 yard run) to keep the Tigers in the game. Justice Felice added the extra point to cut the lead to 24-19 heading in the half.

The Tiger defense - lead by solid efforts from Atkinson, Anton, Centamore, Chapman, Hutton, Locker, McElroy, Tiener & Tyska – played strong in the second half and kept the Tigers in the game until they Colts scored late in the four quarter to seal the 31-19 victory for the Colts.

Tigers 20 vs. Amityville 18

The Northport Tigers 11 year old Black team were on the road in a fight to see who would be the last man standing.   The Tigers won the toss and would throw the first blow.  The Tigers drove 65 yards on 14 plays that included strong runs by RBs Sal Miccio, Justin Gerdvil and Jake Bonomi to set up Northport 1st and goal at the 2.  QB Ben Sandt following his C Ronan Cooney and Guards Justin Schmeiser and Michael Chapman pounded it up the middle to make the score 6-0.  Amityville’s offense countered with a 7 play 65 yard drive.  SS AJ Ranieri came up to stuff the XP point run and keep the score tied 6-6 as the 1st quarter ended.  Amityville D got their legs under them forced Northport to punt, and then broke a big play to score late in the 2nd quarter.  Northport’s DT Sean Nelson, NG Nick Tabert, DT Ronan Cooney, ILB Sal Miccio and SS AJ Ranieri charged thru to stop the extra point and keep the score Amityville 12 Northport 6.

The game and second half would test the TIGERs HEART and DETERMINATION.  Northport’s D would need to make a play and land a solid blow to get the Tigers back in the game.  As Amityville’s QB dropped back to pass looking for the knockout blow, DE Jeremy Gerdvil came in with a De-Cleating sack that forced a fumble that was recovered by NG Nick Tabert to set up the offense at the Amityville’s 24 yard line.  Tigers RB Justin Gerdvil would only need 2 runs, the last being a 14 yard tackling breaking run thru the entire middle of the Amityville’s defense to score and tie the game.  K Ben Sandt XP Kick sailed thru the uprights to give Northport back the lead 14-12.  Amityville would show the Tigers that they wanted this game just as bad and would drive 65 yards again to score to take back the lead 18-14 later in the 4th quarter.  The Tigers offense would need to answer the bell.  This time a 12 play TD drive that was a capped by 5 yard bull run by Justin Gerdvil to give Northport back the lead 20-18.  It would come down to Amityville’s offense again looking for the big blow to knock out the Tigers.  This time the Northport’s D would be ready and ILB Justin Gerdvil would intercept a pass and preserve the hard fought and well-earned victory Northport 20 Amityville 18.

11 Year Old Red

Tigers 25 vs. West Islip 13

Once again, the 11 year old Red team was victorious this past Sunday as they bested the West Islip Lions to remain undefeated on the season.  The Tigers won the toss and after two failed flea flickers to open the game, Ian Melamerson took a sweep wide to the left side behind the blocking of his Brother Dan Melamerson, Matt Picciano, Aidan Ryan, Grady O’Neill, Alex Pica and Guy Davis and rolled 65 yards for the first score of the game.  The tigers then went to work on Defense and did not yield a first down with great tackles form Pica, Will Chisholm and Matt Fuggini.  The Ian Melamerson show continued on the next series as Ian again took the sweep left and punished the West Islip defenders as he went 63 yards for the second score of the game.  On the next series, West Islip attempted to go to the air, But Cornerbacks Liam Caulfield and Fuggini would continuously knock down passes.  Joe Billelo, Henry Miller and Aidan Jolly put pressure on the QB all day long.  The tigers got the ball back and drove for the final score of the half on long runs by QB Will Loeber, 4 Back Patrick Denunzio and then punched it in on a miraculous run by Grady O’Neill whose second effort bounced him off the defender to the outside for the score.  Matt Picciano took the misdirection handoff and cut sharply into the endzone for the extra point.  As the half ended, Northport was up 19-0.  As the second half began, West Islip came out strong and was able to punch in a score and extra point.  The Tigers and the Lions traded possessions and field position went the Tigers way because of two very capable punt returns by Fuggini and Caulfield.  Work in the trenches on both sides of the ball by Ryan Gillam, Brian Hillman, Joe Giardina, Mike Mihalin and Chris Mignanelli proved to be the difference in the Second Half.  When Tigers QB, Will Chisholm handed off to Liam Caulfield, the game was put out of reach as Liam dipped and dashed to a 57 yard cut back TD run.  The Lions would tack on a late TD as Northport went to their prevent D.  All-purpose player, Chris Mignanelli was called on late to run the ball and run the ball, he did.  Three blistering runs for 68 yards sealed the 25-13 victory.  Come out next Sunday as the tigers take their show on the road as they travel to Bayport to showcase the greatest show on turf or grass and attempt to remain undefeated.
