Village Mulls Nonprofit Veterans Group Request

The Northport Board of Trustees mulled a local nonprofit veterans group's request to use the Northport dock for a fundraiser Tuesday, saying they could not grant approval until the group obtained a permit from the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.

Angels for Warriors, an East Northport-based nonprofit group helping returning veterans better access benefits and other critical programs, was founded in late 2012 by local attorney Rogerlyn Velez. Velez named the organization after her brother, Sgt. Angel Valez, who was injured in Afghanistan.

The group is seeking use of the village dock to load and unload passengers onto a 400-passenger dinner boat for a dinner cruise fundraiser in late September.

Mayor George Doll said that the dock has accommodated such large vessels in the past and that he does not see any problems with the request.

"501c3s need to have a permit from Suffolk County Veterans Affairs," Doll said. "We need that first before we can give any approval," said the Mayor, "especially for fundraising."

The Cow Harbor Warriors, another local veterans group, was recently denied permits to hold a second annual fundraising event in Northport because they lacked a fundraising permit from Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency. Though the group has applied, they have still not been issued the permit.

Velez said that her organization has filed all appropriate paperwork and is expecting the county permit by the end of June.
