Lotto Mania Hits Northport

Mega Millions Jackpot swells to $640 million; Patch to announce winning numbers at 11 p.m.

The on Larkfield Road was buzzing with customers looking for a chance to have it all as the Mega Millions Jackpot soared to $640 million on Friday, with some people spending as much as $150 at a time on tickets.

Kate and her husband Abraham of Fort Salonga purchased seven tickets with plans to purchase more as the 11 p.m. drawing approaches. The two said they didn't use a strategy. "I used the numbers that randomly showed up on my calculator when I turned it on," said Abraham.

The couple don't play often and are taking their chances now because of the record jackpot. If they win, they said they would help their families, donate to their favorite animal rescue in New Jersey, and possibly move to Uruguay. They would also donate to local causes. "There's so much need here that some of the money should go here," said Abraham.

Another man from East Northport stopped in to buy lotto tickets using quick pick. "I've been playing since it started," he said. "Back when it was Lotto 54." Though he's never won, and had a pessimistic view of the odds, he continues to play nevertheless in the hopes of one day winning big. 

"I'd set my kids up for life and I'd give a lot to charity. How much money can you spend, you know?"
