A fire that spread from the outside of a home to the roof shut down Bayview Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

Police have blocked the road at the intersection of Main Street since about 2:45 p.m. Northport, Greenlawn and Centerport fire departments were still at the scene as of 3:20 p.m.

The fire may have spread into the home at 67 Bayview through the second floor bathroom while someone was stripping paint off of its exterior, said Northport fire department officials. At that point, the fire then spread to the attic.

Jack Burns, who works next door at Seymour's Boatyard, was one of the first people to see copious amounts of smoke coming out of the sides of the house.

His boss, volunteer firefighter Dave Weber, Jr., immediately responded to check for people inside the home. The man inside got out safely and was not harmed.

Fire department personnel responded and the fire was extinguished within about 30 minutes.
