$1 Million Lotto Win From E. Northport Store

Commack's Maria Matthews Sanders was one of nine winners announced Friday.

A Commack woman struck gold, winning $1 million playing an instant lottery game, the New York Lottery announced Friday.

Maria Matthews Sanders was one of nine winners who shared $13 million, according the Lottery officials.

Sanders purchased the winning ticket at Stop & Shop in East Northport on Jan. 20. According to Newsday, she decided to purchase the ticket while waiting in line at the deli counter. Sanders was in shock when she discovered she had won. She told the paper that she couldn’t get to the lottery’s customer service center in Garden City for two days so she hid the ticket under her mattress and had two restless nights

Her prize will be paid in a lump sum, the lottery said. She will receive a one-time payment of $661,8000 after required withholdings.

Sanders won the $1 million as a second-place prize on a $5 million multiplayer game.
