No. 99: Downtown Main Street

There's lots to love about Northport's Main Street area.

Lots of Long Island towns have beautiful beaches and Northport is among them. It's true, our beaches are wonderful but it's really our pedestrian-friendly downtown that sets us apart.

Northport Village Deputy Mayor Henry Tobin said that municipalities around the country spend millions attempting to create a façade as beautiful as Northport’s Main Street. Architect Alex Latham once referred to the buildings on the northwestern end of Main Street as our postcard. Although, our whole area can be amazingly photogenic — even Hollywood came calling to film "In and Out" with Kevin Kline and Tom Selleck in 1997 — it's easy to agree with that statement.

Downtown features a wide range of not only architectural styles with buildings that are still recognizable as the same ones in historic photos but it has a wide range of businesses, as well.

In addition to just about every service you can think of, Northport's non-chain store, anti-big box Main Street includes a toy store; two women's clothing stores; two candy stores; a florist, a bakery, a deli, three pizza places and a plethora of restaurants and bars.

Many descriptive words have been used to describe Northport's down town, ranging form bucolic, idyllic and charming to Mayberry-like and, if you're lucky enough, home. In my humble opinion, they're all accurate.
