Kids Play Firefighter for a Day

Children and parents can learn about fire safety Saturday at the Northport firehouse.

The Northport Fire Department will host its 18th annual Meet Your Friend the Firefighter program today from noon until 2 p.m. at the firehouse, 204 Main Street.

The program is designed especially for children less than 6 years old and their parents.

Children will get the chance to practice fire safety skills including getting to see the inside of an ambulance, a simulated bedroom with non toxic smoke so children can learn how to crawl low and get out of a burning building and practice stop , drop and roll.

Parents will also have the opportunity to learn about the proper use of helmets for bicycles, skateboard and scooters. They will also learn about the WHALE (We Have a Little Emergency) program. Information regarding their children can be written on decals posted on the back or underneath a child’s car seat for in the event of an accident where a parent is incapacitated and required hospitalization.

There is no charge for the program and families will also be able to meet Sparky, the fire safety mascot.
