Gin, Wine, Great Neighbors: How Northport Coped With Sandy Power Outages

Share your own Sandy story on our open blog.

More than 80 percent of LIPA customers lost power in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and many remained in the dark for several days, with a few waiting well more than a week for power to be restored.

On the one year anniversary of Sandy, we asked readers on our Facebook page how long they were without power and how they coped. Here's a few of the responses:

Robert Cohen: 3 days, gin

Ken Wilhelm: 13 days in the forgotten corner of town by Townline and Claypits. My family has a wood burning stove and gas heat so we were warm in the darkness.

Jayne St Mary Conwell: 9 days. Wine, and great neighbors!

Cheryl Tuttle Ondrovic Eleven days, no fireplace, no heat electric or hot water. Praying it does not happen ever again

Linda Wood Serrano: 12 days no heat no hot water 2 kids 2 dogs and my 95 year young aunt I never want to be without heat that long ever again all I did was worry about my aunt and the cold

Angela Jean Basso Richards: 2 weeks...lost everything in the freezer and fridge. Trees down and i thank god i was away. Never thought traveling after hurricane season would cause so much damage.
