Original article: The white powdery stuff began falling early Wednesday in Northport, and residents can expect much more, as the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Suffolk County and other parts of Long Island that started at 10 a.m. Wednesday that will last until 6 a.m. Thursday.

Snow is expected to fall throughout the morning into the afternoon, and forecasters warn that a mixture of heavy snow and sleet will make for a dangerous Wednesday evening commute.

Snow accumulations are expected to reach between 4 to 8 inches in the area, and while strong winds are expected in parts of Northern New Jersey and New York City, Long Island will bear the brunt of the winds, receiving gusts up to 35 miles per hour.

Forecasts warn that that heaviest snow is expected to fall overnight, making for a hazardous commute early Thursday morning. The snow is expected to stop for good by Thursday morning.
