East Northport Native Named America East Player of the Week

Melissa Rigo proves to be a volleyball standout at Stony Brook University.

East Northport resident Melissa Rigo was named America East Player of the Week last week, after recording three consecutive double-doubles to help the Stony Brook volleyball team secure wins against Bryant and Princeton last Saturday at the Bryant Invitational.

Rigo averaged 3.33 kills and 3.67 digs per set while hitting an efficient .358 on the weekend, according to a press release from the University. In the Seawolves’ sweep of the home team, Bryant, she hit a stellar .542 and chipped in five blocks.

The East Northport resident was previously named the America East Rookie of the Year. She amassed double-figures in kills in six consecutive matches and double-doubles in five of the last six contests.

Rigo was a seven-time Rookie of the Week winner last season and was the only freshman to be named first-team all-conference, according to the press release. This is the first Player of the Week honor for the outside hitter.
