Dozens of dogs and their owners turned out for the Paws for a Cause Halloween costume contest and parade on Sunday to benefit the Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice of Suffolk.
Dogs and their owners turned out in the spirit of Halloween and good will on Sunday for the Paws for a Cause dog walk and costume contest to benefit the Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice of Suffolk (VNSHS) Hospice House in East Northport. The event, presented jointly by the Northport Chamber of Commerce, the East Northport Chamber of Commerce, and the VNSHS, saw dozens of dogs outfitted with Halloween Costumes ranging from punks and princesses to hot dogs and donuts compete for pluckiest pooch. Contestants met for the costume contest at the VNHSHS on Main Street prior to a parade down to Village Park. The grand prize went to Debbie Poznack-Olsen and her dog, Gina, for raising the most money; first prize went to Nikky Martin and her dog, …

Our local departments 'represented' in fine fashion the Ancient Order of Hibernians Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Fair weather and (sometimes) blue skies accompanied the thousands who came down to Huntington Village Sunday for the 77th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade organized by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. The route along New York Avenue and Main Street was jammed with onlookers who came to get their annual fill of shamrocks, smiles, and all things kelly green. Members of town government were part of the early procession of marchers, and would join Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson – who was the master of ceremonies for this year’s parade – on the grandstand. Town Supervisor Frank Petrone, along with town councilmembers Susan Berland, Glenda Jackson, and Mark Mayoka all greeted the paraders with the enthusiasm and spirit that befits St. Patrick’s…

Local fire departments helped usher in the holiday season November 27 by participating in the Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting in Huntington village. Thousands of residents lined the streets of New York Avenue and Main Street to welcome Santa and all his helpers, volunteers from the local fire departments and other organizations that participated. The parade and festival were sponsored by the Town of Huntington, the Huntington Fire Chiefs' Council, the Huntington and Huntington Manor Fire Departments, the Huntington Village and Huntington Station business-improvement districts, and the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce.

Northport's annual celebration was well-attended.
The largest crowd in 30 years attended Northport Village's Cow Harbor Day Sept. 26, much to organizers' relief following the rain in 2009. Close to 20,000 people total were on hand for the kickoff parade as well and the festivities following the parade, according to Northport Police Chief Ric Bruckenthal. "I originally estimated it at 15,000 but we were quite under," Chief Bruckenthal said, adding that the weekend, including the Great Cow Harbor 10K Run Saturday, was "absolutely uneventful as far as police activity goes." Northport Village Trustee Damon McMullen said the view of the crowd from the parade reviewing stand at the foot of Main Street was astounding. "As far as you could see, at least to [St. Paul's Methodist Church] people …

Dogs of many shapes and sizes were seen around town over the Cow Harbor weekend.
Some say it's a dog's world. While that may or may not be true, Northport sure seemed like a dog's town over the weekend as the Great Cow Harbor 10K Run and Cow Harbor Day parade and waterfront festivities took place. Little dogs, big dogs, fluffy dogs, hairless dogs . . . Just about any type of dog one can think of could be seen downtown Saturday and Sunday. Northport Village is very dog-friendly town. The Board of Trustees several years ago purchased containers to hold disposable plastic bags for canine waste. The board also encourages dog walking in the Village Park at the foot of Main Street as it keeps the Canada geese from taking over and littering the grounds with their excrement. Dogs must be on a leash, however, and are not …
