PHOTOS: Northport Getting Back To Normal

Revelers at this summer's final Tuesday Family Fun Night were a sign that things are getting back to normal after Hurricane Irene.

Northport was back to normal and celebrated its final Family Fun Night of the year on Tuesday evening. It was the perfect temperature with a beautiful blue sky, no wind, and low humidity, a needed respite after the Northport was battered by Hurricane Irene. The night included the Coyote Jazz Band, the Northport High School Rock/Jazz band, "The Founders," Uncle Doug's Minute To Win It games, DJ Tom Bruno, along with food served by Main Street restaurants. There was something for everyone on Tuesday evening including face painting, fortune telling, free Child ID cards, and a variety of items for sale.

State DOT — or Someone — Tracking Local Traffic

Traffic counters have sprung up across the roadways in Northport.

Thick black wires began being placed area roads recently. One so alarmed a resident, it prompted a call to Northport police. Although the wires are simply attached to traffic counters, why they are there is somewhat of a mystery. Those placed on Woodbine Avenue were deployed by a consultant through the New York State Department of Transportation traffic group office in Albany, according to NYSDOT public information officer Eileen Peters. "They are routine counters and should remain for about a week at each location," she said. Traffic counts are usually taken on state roads every three years and the data is mostly used to meet required federal clean-air monitoring standards. The data gathered is also used to maintain our traffic count …

Northport Police Blotter

Northport Police Blotter: Why Did I Park Atop Snowbank? Because I Can

A Jeep owner parks on snow; license plates are lost or stolen; purses and watches found and returned. This is more from the reports of the Northport Police Department for Feb. 13 through Feb. 23.

Police responded to the Artisan House Wednesday, Feb. 23 following a call reporting that a 52-year-old Smithtown woman fell through a trap door behind the counter. The door had been removed for access to workers doing repairs. The woman was transported to Huntington Hospital. Geraldine Daly of Terry Road, Northport, called police Wednesday, Feb. 23 to report that, upon returning from vacation, she had noticed her front license plate, NY DALYBRED, was missing from her vehicle. Police advised her to surrender the rear plate and they would file a report with New York State at that time. Police received a report Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 2:08 p.m. that trees were allegedly being cut at the First Presbyterian Church in violation of the Northport …

Northport Planning: Steep Slopes and Site Plans

An extension of the preliminary approval on the Gemport site plan and two steep slope extensions were presented to the Board.

O'Shea Steep Slope, 167 Bayview This resolution requested a steep slope application for the waterfront, .42 acre-property, two-family property owned by William O'Shea at 167 Bayview Avenue. The steep slope application was being pursued under Section 219-27 of the Village code. The request was being filed so that two existing three- to four-foot retaining walls could be moved back, a little to the west of where the walls currently are. O'Shea's attorney Christopher Modelewski noted that an application to construct a second story on the house was heard by the Zoning Board of Appeals in 2005, chaired then and now by Andy Cangemi. It was denied at that time because it was revealed through testimony that the basement at the residence …

Snowfall Reaches Two Feet in Some Areas

The snow began falling Tuesday evening and barely stopped until morning.

Northport was hit with two feet of snow in some areas Wednesday night. The Northport Highway Department began sanding Tuesday night and plowing as soon as it became necessary. While most of the main roadways are clear Wednesday morning, parking lots and driveways still need to be cleared out. Although Main Street was basically deserted at 8 a.m., Northport Village Clerk Donna Koch made it to Village Hall and is open for business. Call before going to be sure she is still there. 631-261-7502. The Long Island Rail Road suspended service between Huntington and Hicksville today because of the weather. The 6:38 a.m. train from Huntington that was due in Atlantic Terminal at 7:36 a.m. was stuck at Cold Spring Harbor. Also canceled:  The 8:55 a.m…

Photos: Winter Arrives in Northport

The day after Christmas brings blizzard conditions to Northport.

Northport Village was eerily quiet on Sunday morning, the day after Christmas. Snow began falling just after 10 a.m. as people hurried about their business buying deicer, shovels and of course, coffee. Within hours, the area blanketed with the snow's startling whiteness. Northport  got the proverbial white Christmas a day late. By the afternoon, the snow proved unrelenting and the wind turned even a quick walk outside into a stinging experience. Expect the snow to keep coming. Patch will bring your more photos throughout the day. Add your photos too.
