Sean Gilroy's four goals power Northport past West Babylon, 17-6, in first round of Suffolk Class A boys lacrosse playoffs.
Northport Boys Lacrosse Coach George Searing put a pin in any enthusiasm coursing through the postgame huddle with two words: West Islip. Yes, Northport ran wild over West Babylon in a first-round playoff Thursday at Veterans Park, scoring the game’s first eight goals en route to a 17-6 win. The eighth-seeded Tigers (11-6) dominated faceoffs, looked explosive with the ball and turned away No. 9 West Babylon attacks. It was a near-perfect performance. But the opening salvo of the Suffolk Class A playoffs leads Northport down the road to a juggernaut. The Tigers move on to face No. 1 West Islip in a quarterfinal Tuesday 4 p.m. at West Islip. That’s a tough draw considering West Islip (15-1) is the eight-time defending Suffolk champ and …

West Islip is the top seed for boys; Ward Melville is No. 1 girls team.
Lacrosse is a Long Island state of mind, and nothing showcased that more than the state playoffs a year ago. Three Long Island boys squads played in state title games, which ended with Farmingdale hoisting its first Class A plaque. It could have easily been West Islip instead. The teams played a thrilling Long Island championship game decided in overtime. West Islip, after all, has worn four of the last six state crowns. Perennial girls lacrosse power Northport finally broke through and won its first state Class A championship. In fact, Long Island girls teams have won nine of 10 possible state class titles (A, B, C) since 2009. But the first step is winning Suffolk, which begins with boys and girls lacrosse playoff games this week. The …

Chaminade beat St. Anthony's Thursday in battle of nationally-ranked lacrosse programs.
Chaminade jumped in front early and held off a late St. Anthony's charge to earn an 11-8 boys lacrosse win in a showdown of nationally-ranked CHSAA rivals. While the Flyers swept the regular-season series, Thursday’s meeting was simply a bridge to the title game May 24 at 4:45 p.m. at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium. Here is a look at the game in photos.

Flyers earn 11-8 road win over St. Anthony's, take both regular-season meetings.
They struck in a brilliant flash of red and gold as each Chaminade jersey caught the late afternoon sunlight and shimmered with every goal. The Flyers boys lacrosse team, ranked fifth in the nation by ESPN, exploded for four goals in the first 7:44 Thursday to run past host St. Anthony’s, 11-8, in a Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA showdown. “We focused on getting those early goals,” said senior midfield Matt Graham, a Michigan signee, who scored three first-half goals to power Chaminade (13-1) to a regular-season sweep of rival St. Anthony’s. And like the previous meeting, a 6-5 Flyers win on April 5, Chaminade jumped way in front early. “I wish I knew the cure,” St. Anthony’s Coach Keith Wieczorek said. “We talked about it all week. We talked …

Northport boys lacrosse beats Corning, jamboree honors Louis Acompora.
It was a win, win. The Northport boys lacrosse team rallied to beat upstate power Corning Saturday at Veterans Park in East Northport, capping a day of thrilling lacrosse while raising awareness. The day-long event was named for Louis Acompora, a goalie on the freshman lacrosse team who died in 2000 after being struck in the chest with a ball and suffering commotio cordis, a rare form of cardiac arrest. In the decade since, the Louis Acompora Foundation has made a nationwide push for widespread use of automated external defibrillators. AEDs are now a common sight in schools and on athletic fields throughout the state. The Foundation promoted CPR in schools legislation: www.supportcprinschools.org. They also taught hands only CPR at a …

Louis Acompora died 12 years ago, but his family's mission to save lives is marked by lacrosse jamboree.
It’s been more than 12 years since a 14-year-old lacrosse player from Northport became the face an entire safety movement. Louis Acompora was a freshman at Northport High School when he died while playing the sport he loved. A goalie on the freshman lacrosse team, Acompora was struck in the chest with a ball and suffered commotio cordis, a rare form of cardiac arrest. The family claimed he could have been revived had there been an automated external defibrillator on hand. And soon after they began an aggressive push to make it happen. The Long Island sports community reacted almost immediately, putting defibrillators at high school sports events. On June 27, 2002, with father John Acompora on hand, Gov. George Pataki signed into law a bill…

St. Anthony's and Glenn stars earn spots on All-State team.
Two girls basketball teams who made runs deep into the postseason placed star players on the All-State Basketball Team. The New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports released the all-star teams Wednesday, and athletes from St. Anthony’s and Glenn earned recognition. Glenn senior center Allison McKenna, Newsday’s Long Island player of the year, was named to the All-State Class A second team. St. Anthony’s senior Symone Kelly and junior Rebecca Musgrove, both All-Long Island picks, were selected to the All-State Class AA second team. McKenna, who won a state volleyball title in the fall, took Glenn to back-to-back Suffolk titles and a trip to the state Final Four in March. She signed with Geneseo. The Siena-…

Big week for Jamel Hudson, who plans to sign with Hofstra and is contestant on MSG Varsity talent show.
Few teens have felt the spotlight’s glare quite like the one focused on Jamel Hudson. This week alone, the St. Anthony’s senior had his face adorn a national magazine, a musical performance hit TV and intends to sign a full-ride college scholarship. While the common thread is his outstanding season on the mat, Hudson’s versatility is what’s caught everyone’s attention. He’s got moves – and a voice – that go well beyond his wrestling skills. Hudson, who became just the fourth Catholic league wrestler to ever win a state Federation title, was recently named state wrestler of the year. It’s a feat that earned mention in the latest Sports Illustrated. Meanwhile, Hudson also appeared on the MSG Varsity Talent Show. And Friday he signs a …

East Northport native Ashleen says her family's past work with the New York Islanders made being an Ice Girl special.
If you have ever been to Nassau Coliseum to watch the New York Islanders take the ice you have also been witness to the Ice Girls – a group of women who clean the ice, get the crowd excited and perform community service activities off the rink. East Northport has one of its own who took the ice this past season, first-year Ice Girl Ashleen. Although the season is over for the New York Islanders, Northport Patch caught up with Ashleen, who shared her story of a personal connection with the team, a connection she's had since she was five weeks old.
