The East Northport Public Library, which opened as a branch of the Northport Public Library in June 1940, has a…More fascinating history. The original library was destroyed in a fire in 1945, though most of the books were saved, thanks partly to a Boy Scout book brigade that carried books to safety in a nearby store.
A new library building, erected on the site in 1949, served the community until the mid-1990s, when it was deemed too small to accommodate the growth of the community and the expansion of library services.
By October 1997, the library, located directly adjacent to John Walsh Park, had undergone an expansive renovation. It now features spacious reading and computer areas, meeting rooms and trendy cafes. As in the old building, there is a cozy seating area centered around a fireplace.
