In 2008, it became part of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Grid_plc#USA">National Grid USA</a> as part of that company's purchase of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KeySpan">KeySpan.</a> The plant's output is managed by the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Island_Power_Authority">Long Island Power Authority</a>. LIPA is a non-profit municipal electric provider, which owns the transmission and distribution system for retail electric power on Long Island.</p> <p>The plant has been named the second worst polluting power plant in the country but in June completed a $100 million project to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and fuel use there by 40 percent.</p>

The facility sits on 13 acres and processes 750 tons per day of solid waste, which generates up to 25 megawatts of renewable energy that is sold to Long Island Power Authority. The facility is part of an integrated solid waste management system for communities where land-filling is prohibited by state law.
