The Elwood School District is home to four schools, housing a total population of just under 2,200 students. This is…More the only middle school in the district and it is located on the same campus as both the high school, called Elwood-John Glenn, and the district's administrative offices.
Sixth grade instruction includes the basic skills of language arts, reading, mathematics, social studies, and science. Other subjects include physical education, art, music, study skills, health, technology and careers. Four fully-networked IBM computers are located in each grade classroom to assist with the integration of curriculum materials and to provide additional instructional support.
In seventh grade, a strong academic program is enhanced by acceleration opportunities in science and mathematics. Foreign language instruction is introduced. Every seventh grader participates in general music, band, orchestra, or chorus. A special, intensive 10-week writing course, "Authors' Workshop," is offered to all seventh graders to enhance their communication skills.
Eighth graders add health instruction to their curriculum, to help them understand and cope with many critical topics.
