Northport High School Loses Beloved Teacher to ALS

David Deutsch, the inspiration behind A Midwinter Night's Dream, succumbed to the disease on Wednesday.

Northport High School chemistry teacher David Deutsch passed away Wednesday after an eight-year battle with ALS, his diagnosis the inspiration for hundreds of students, faculty, and alumni who have since raised over $2.5 million for ALS research through the Midwinter Night's Dream charity. The hallmark nerve degeneration of ALS had paralyzed Deutsch and led to complications that frequently resulted in long hospital stays. Sadly, he was unable to attend this year's AMND gala after developing a bad case of pneumonia, which took a turn for the worse this weekend. Northport Mourns Loss of Former Police Chief

Robert Howard, 70, died on Tuesday after an aortic aneurysm.

Former Northport Police Chief Robert "Bob" Howard died on Tuesday evening at age 70 after suffering an aortic aneurism while loading luggage during his part-time job as a limousine driver in East Northport. "He was in surgery for seven hours and it was just too much trauma for him to recover," said his son, Northport Police Officer Peter Howard. "Me and my brothers and mother were there with him." Bob served in the US Air Force from 1959 to 1963 and as a NYC transit cop before taking the job as a police officer with the Northport Police Department in 1964. He quickly worked his way up the ranks from sergeant in 1971, lieutenant in 1975, commanding officer in 1979, and finally to chief in 1980.  In his 20 year tenure as chief, Bob …

Body of Missing Northport Resident Found

The body of Freddy Piercey, missing since Dec. 6, was found in Northport Harbor Saturday.

The body of Northport resident Freddy Piercey, 68, was discovered in the harbor on Saturday morning alongside Seymour's Boatyard, according to sources. He had been missing since Dec. 6 when he was last seen leaving Gunther's Tap Room around 7 p.m. Police have not yet confirmed the details of the incident, nor determined a cause of death. Freddy Piercey was a longtime Northport character commonly seen walking, paddling in his canoe, or at local taverns. Easily identifiable by his long gray hair and beard, he lived here in the streets of Northport all his life and served his country in the Army. He knew Jack Kerouac, Stanley Twardowicz, and other local legends. He was a well-respected employee of Davis Aircraft for 15 years. "Freddy was …

Harley Avenue Primary Teacher Dies

Community mourns passing of first grade teacher Mary Kate Szokoli, who died early Friday.

Mary Kate Szokoli, a first grade teacher at Harley Avenue Primary School in Elwood, died early Friday morning, according to school officials. Details surrounding the circumstances of her death have not yet been released. Szokoli is a graduate of Glenn High School and began her career at Harley Primary, where she has taught for the past nine years. "The Elwood Board of Education and administration wish to extend our prayers and deepest condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time," Elwood Superintendent Peter Scordo said in a statement this afternoon. Evelyn M. Leist, 85, 'Quintessential Hostess'

Leist, admired for her wit and wisdom, loved to entertain and made lifelong friendships.

Evelyn M. Leist, born in Brooklyn and formerly of Northport, died peacefully on July 25 at the age of 85 in her Sarasota, Fla. home. She was the loving wife of the recently deceased Robert L. Leist and is survived by her sisters, Ruth and Alice; her two daughters, Robin and Nancy; her son Steve, daughter-in-law Leigh Anne, and grandson Carl.  Leist was a welcoming and generous hostess to all visitors and acquaintances and made close friendships that lasted a lifetime. While living in Northport from 1965-80, she enjoyed shopping and going out to eat at Al Dowd's Steakhouse in Centerport every Friday night with friends. Past Fire Commissioner Ed Hehir Dies at 91

Past East Northport FD Commissioner, WWII Vet, and retired Suffolk Police Detective was active in the community through his final years.

Lifelong Northport resident and community fixture Edward Hehir died Monday in East Northport at the age of 91. Hehir was the devoted husband of Lucille Hehir, loving father of Laurie O’Neill Elizabeth Lauschus, cherished "Pop Pop" of Robert J. and Patrick Murphy and Amanda Lauschus, and dear brother of Mary Olivari, Joan Reid, Donald Hehir and the late John and Gerry Hehir.  Hehir's childhood friend, Jim Mahoney, who delivered the eulogy Thursday at Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home, remembered how much Hehir loved to sing songs like "Little Bit of Heaven." George Albert Stoddard, 102, Dies

He was a World War II veteran and longtime employee of the VAMC.

George Albert Stoddard was born in Springfield, MA on October 2, 1908. When he was a teenager he relocated to the harsh streets of New York City. He took a job as a messenger on Wall Street and just before the Great Crash of '29 he took a position as a cook at the then newly built Veteran's Affairs on Medical Center in Northport. George worked hard and proved himself at the VAMC, and in a very short time was promoted to Chief Cook where he oversaw the preparation of meals for the thousands of patients from July 1929 until his retirement in October 1967.  George also dedicated himself to the service of others and his community. He was a Freemason with the Alcyone Lodge #695, Northport and on October 28th, 2008 celebrated 65 years in this …

Lambert 'Bus' Mack Dies at 70; Funeral Tuesday

Lambert "Bus" Mack, a key figure in the Eatons Neck Youth Club, died Thursday. He was 70 years old. Mack, a Northport resident, was past president and a board member and referee with the club. He started out as an assistant coach and then moved on to head coach, division chairperson and then president. He was president of the group through the 1990s. He was the founder of senior night as well as the founder of the scholarship program. Mack served as a board member and a senior referee in the league. The Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home in Northport said Mack leaves his wife, Cindy (nee Koster) Mack; two sons, Greg (and his wife, Casey) and Jeff; a grandson, Aaron; and three sisters, Mary Ann McLaughlin, Barbie Whitty and Susan Magee.  A …

John T. Hoops, World War II Hero, Passes Away at 89

Participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and Pacific Theatre.

John T. Hoops, a one-time chief yeoman in the U.S. Navy and flag writer for the late Fleet Adm. William F. (Bull) Halsey, died on Christmas day. The East Northport resident was 89. Born in Brooklyn on Feb. 23, 1921, the son of John H. and Catherine Hoops of Glendale, New York, Hoops graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in June 1940. He enlisted in the Navy on Nov. 2, 1940. Hoops, a "Plank Owner" (part of the commissioning crew) of the destroyer USS Walke (DD-723), participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, on June 6, 1944, bombarding German blockhouses in Cherbourg, France. Afterwards the ship transited via the Panama Canal to the Western Pacific and the Philippine Sea where he participated in the re-taking of the Philippine …

Michael Mangino, 67, St. Anthony's Football Coach, Dies

Deer Park resident spent 35 years at Nassau Health Department and 21 as Friars assistant football coach.

Michael Mangino, a longtime assistant football coach and former teacher at St. Anthony's High School, died suddenly Friday while visiting family in Naples, Fla. He was 67. Mangino, of Deer Park, worked at the Nassau County Health Department for 35 years. But sports was always a passion. You could find him on a golf course or football field most of the year. He started coaching football at St. Anthony's with the freshman team in 1990. He also once served as head freshman boys lacrosse coach.
