National Grid Power Plant

The four smokestacks of the National Grid Power Plant in Northport, each painted red and white and standing 600 feet tall, can be viewed from many locations around the town and village, Connecticut and Long Island Sound.

This plant, built in 1967 by the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO), generates oil and natural gas. In 2008, it became part of National Grid USA as part of that company's purchase of KeySpan. The plant's output is managed by the Long Island Power Authority. LIPA is a non-profit municipal electric provider, which owns the transmission and distribution system for retail electric power on Long Island.

The plant has been named the second worst polluting power plant in the country but in June completed a $100 million project to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and fuel use there by 40 percent.
