Northport Agenda: Park Bench Dedication, Gay and Lesbian Film Festival

Daylight Saving Time may have come to an end, but there's still plenty of daylight on the weekend to have some fun. Here's a few events happening in the area this weekend: 

NORTHPORT

Park Bench Dedication Honoring Vet Who Survived Pearl Harbor

A plaque on the bench will honor 30 years of service that Frank Minnock, who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, gave to the U.S. Navy including his service in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  The bench will be assembled and put in place by the General Service Department of the Town of Huntington.  A dedication ceremony will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. at Veterans Plaza Park (Walsh Park, Larkfield Road, East Northport). Town Supervisor Frank Petrone will preside at the ceremony.  All are welcomed to the ceremony.

Gay and Lesbian Film Festival 

The 16th annual Long Island Gay and Lesbian Film Festival gets underway at Cinema Arts Friday and runs through Monday. Ten feature films, five documentaries, twenty-one shorts, plus guest filmmakers and community groups, discussions, parties and receptions are on the schedule.

The Walt Whitman Birthplace offers its third annual Walking with Whitman: Poetry in Performance, hosted by Walt Whitman Birthplace writer-in-residence George Wallace. Ray McNiece with Pramila Venkateswaran are featured at the performance Saturday, which runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Workshops, Writing With Whitman, are scheduled from 3-5 p.m.
