Northport, East Northport Parades Monday
Northport American Legion members and boy scout troops placed flags of remembrance at local cemeteries.
In preparation for Memorial Day, local veterans and boy scouts placed more than 1,000 flags at grave sites of veterans at St. Philip Neri, Genola Rural and Northport Rural cemeteries Saturday morning.
The first flag was placed on the grave of , a veteran and longtime member of the legion who died recently.
Memorial Day parades will take place in both Northport and East Northport Monday.
The Northport parade, sponsored by the , is scheduled to step off from the at 10 a.m. and travel to the foot of Main Street.
The procession will stop to lay wreaths at memorials along the parade route. They are: the Civil War monument at Main and Church streets; the World War I monument at Main Street and Woodside Avenue on the front lawn of the Northport Historical Society; the Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom monument in front of the Northport Fire Department firehouse as well as one for fallen fire depatment chief Fred Loggia, also in front of the firehouse; the
World War II monument as well as the 'Anchor of Hope,' both at Main Street and Bayview Avenue; the Korean and Vietnam wars monument at Main Street and Woodbine Avenue; the military women’s monument on the south side of Main
Street near Northport Harbor; the Vietnam War monument on the north side of Main Street near the harbor; and at the World War I monument at the base of the flag pole in . The will also lay a wreath in the harbor.
A Memorial Day ceremony will take place in Northport Village Park following the parade. Northport Mayor George Doll will be grand marshal of the parade. The Reverend Steven Bayne, of the Island Christian Church in East Northport and Rev. Monsignor Thomas Colgan, Pastor Emeritus of St. Philip Neri Church, will offer prayers. Judge G. Ann Spelman will be the keynote speaker.
Northport Middle School students Kady Hogan and Quinn Pace will recite "In
Flanders Field." Northport High School student Sam Kim will recite Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. And, Matthew Allen and Dennis Szymanski will perform Echo Taps.
The East Northport parade, sponsored by the , Father Judge Council, steps off from Clay Pitts and Larkfield roads at 12:15 p.m. The parade heads north toward Pulaski Road to
In Huntington, wreaths will be placed Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in Veterans Plaza at the WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, Women's Veterans monuments and to honor troops now serving.
The ceremony will also honor USMC 1st Lt. James Byler of Huntington, who was seriously wounded in Afghanistan. Byler is grand marshal of the Huntington Memorial Day. Refreshments to follow ceremony, Town Hall, 100 Main St., Huntington. Call Carol Rocco at 351-3012.
