Northport Youth Lacrosse Report: June 5 and 6

A roundup of games from last weekend.

On Sunday, June 5,  Northport Lacrosse Club hosted “Northport Day" for Girls Lacrosse teams grades 3 through 6.

What took place was a great day of lacrosse where six girls teams played their final home game at Northport High School.

Under a tent, Northport Lacrosse Club provided BBQ and refreshments for all players and families, as well as visiting teams. An apparel sale and team parties with a “fun zone” dunk tank rounded out the day.

Northport Lacrosse Club thanks all the players, parents, coaches and Board Members who worked so hard to make this event happen. Additional thanks go to the sponsors: Loeber Tents, Hipsters, Ooh La La Spa, Jackie Shawn Salon, The Willen Family, and HUX Plumbing.

Goals this week from Isabel Testa-2, Katie Dennin-1 and Kate McLam-3. Olivia Alper and Diana Glancy guarded the net well and got great defensive support from Sophia DeRosa, Natalie Miller, Shea Contino and Mackenzie Katz, who returned to the team after being sidelined  with a leg injury. Kerry Dennin was able to shut down Levittown’s best player. Caroline Fitzgerald and Siofra Murdoch dominated the ground balls with Caela Lembo, Jillian Preston, Julia Koenig and Katherine Tuohy relentlessly attacking on offense.

Following the game, the girls celebrated their victory with a great BBQ provided by Northport Lacrosse Club and their parents. It was part of the first annual “Northport Day” for Girls Lacrosse. A special thanks to Coach Nora Nolan (5th/6th gr girls coach) who spearheaded this wonderful event  showcasing the talents and efforts of the  girls teams!

The Northport 5th grade girls lacrosse team lost 12-6 to Manhasset on 6/5/11 despite a strong Northport offensive effort.  Close to twenty shots on goal were deflected by a talented Manhasset goalkeeper.  Northport girls kept the pressure on throughout the game, significantly closing the gap in the final minutes of play.  Katherine Meyer’s two goals and single goals from Kate Boland, Makela Bruen, Caeley Gruhn and Lauren Trebour contributed to the offensive effort.  The post game festivities at the Northport Girls Lacrosse Jamboree provided great food and fun activities to all the lacrosse athletes.  Thank you to the Northport Lacrosse Club for sponsoring a magnificent day!

Head Coach: Nora Nolan                                                                                                       Last Game: Northport 8 – Jericho 5

The 5th/6th grade team came out strong in their final home game of the season against Hicksville this past Sunday. Goalkeeper Shannon Citrin blocked 19 shots, allowing 6 goals and made many successful clears. Defensive players Mara Nolan, Abigail Melillo and Katherine Meyer protected the fan well, but when two of the players were injured, it created an opportunity for Hicksville to score. Ryan Dowling and Emerson Cabrera substituted in at defense and did a great job holding Hicksville off, allowing Northport to come out with the win.Northport’s Samantha Hinke played Defensive Wing, where she showed off her defensive talents and speed – turning the ball over and getting it up the field quickly to the offense. Midfield players Deirdre Enright, Stephanie Tsangaris, Ciara Lavin, Nicole Orella, and Katy Dittrich moved the ball well to their teammates on attack — Colleen McNelis, Julia Louis, Grace Contino, Nina MacAgnone and Lauren Trebour — to capitalize their efforts on Hicksville.

Game balls were awarded to players with exemplary performance in the game. Game Ball #1 went to Colleen McNelis for her constant effort on attack and defense throughout the season, making tremendous strides in her level of play. Game Ball #2 went to Katy Dittrich – playing offense and defense well on the midfield line, Katy has made many positive contributions to the team. Game Ball #3 went to Ciara Lavin – always ready to be in the game, Ciara works hard at midfield and attack and is an asset to the team. Game Ball #4 went to Grace Contino – working hard on attack all season, Grace has shown tremendous strides in her skills in lacrosse.

In a well played game, Northport rallied back from a 3 goal deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 8 when time ran out. Ethan Stracuzza was the standout on attack scoring several goals and hustling all over the field. The entire midfield unit played excellent with Will Voss and Thomas Panarello scoring key goals and scooping up ground balls. Preston Engelis and Peter Garbarino did well in the face off circle as well. Connor Craig put in a strong effort in both the offensive and defensive zones. The defensive unit of Patton Derosa and Will Armstrong were ably assisted by Sean Truehart and Mark Kennedy. Both goalies, Jack Ryan and Connor Stahl, played well, with Connor making some tremendous clearing passes to the midfielders. Alec D'Amaro,  Joe Avallone, Dylan Adelman, Peter Gambino, Connor Widmaier, and John Canfield also played some of their best lacrosse of the year.
