Northport Historical Society Hosts Talk On Baseball And Collectible Cards
"Embrace your inner hero" as longtime baseball enthusiast Terry Treanor discusses the history of America's favorite pastime, and baseball cards today at 1:30 pm.
The “old ball game” has long reigned as our nation’s favorite pastime. The Northport Historical Society will host a talk by Terry Treanor, entitled, “Sports Memorabilia: Embracing Your Inner Hero,” today at 1:30 pm. This program is being conducted in conjunction with the exhibit, “Growing Up Northport,” which juxtaposes the unique experience of growing up in Northport with the changes that took place in the concept of childhood and child-rearing practices from 1870s to the 1970s.
According to information provided in the exhibit, in the late 1860s, a sporting goods company, Peck and Snyder, printed up what are considered to be the first baseball cards. Tobacco companies soon followed suit as a way of boosting their sales.
According to a press release, Treanor, a sport artist, historian and art teacher, has had a lifelong fascination with baseball. He’ll be discussing the history of the sport, and the game as a reflection of American values. Treanor will also trace the evolution of the boys of summer, the professional ball players, printed baseball memorabilia, including cards, and how the laws of supply and demand impact value.

“It is my hope . . . I can inform the public about how to have a fun and potentially rewarding experience with baseball cards and collectibles without being taken advantage of, “Treanor said.
