Donations for Northport and Elwood Relays Near $300,000 Mark

More than 1900 registered participants and 207 teams raised $291,845.00 during the Relay for Life events.

Donations are still coming in but so far, the amount of money raised at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life events in Northport and Elwood stands at $291,845.00

At Monday's BOE meeting, Northport High School Principal Irene McLaughlin praised the efforts of the 2000 people who turned out for the event, which was organized by math teacher David Storch along with the American Cancer Society's Dawn Tropeano.  "It's sad but it's also wonderful to see our community galvanized against such a terrible disease."

On June 2, 1,366 participants and 143 teams took to the high school track, raising $223,535 and bringing the total in four years for the Northport event to well over $700,000.

The Titanium Titans ($13,680) were the top fund-raising team whose members included  John Fondacaro, Zachary Fondacaro, Renee Fondacaro, Jacob Fondacaro, Hannah Fondacaro, Michael Chin, Olga Belleau, Peter Chin, Thomas Belleau, Maria Chin, Lyndon Chin, Brooke O'Brien, Kathy Mays, and Marilyn Cambria.

Kimberly Casper, Brittany Jones, Melissa Rath, Nick Cleary, Dylan Porcello, and Peter Werthner, otherwise known as Diamonds on the Lake, raised $12,722.08.

Bosom Buddies, composed of teammates Amee Stein, David Stein, Jennifer Bay, Linda Bay, Brooke Helmes, Robin Monaco, Joseph Bay, Denise Elmore, Karen Lindberg and Bobbi O'Connor, raised $9211.

The top participants were Amee Stein ($7361), Kimberly Casper ($5884.08) and Peter Werthner ($4560.00).

In Elwood, 567 registered participants and 64 teams raised $68,310 for the event.

Top team Never Give Up, whose teammates included Lauren Rincon, Alexandra Centeno-Rincon, Deborah Hemphill, Nicolette Hession, Gillian Marino, Amanda Astarita, Nancy Goddard, Kristen Hemphill, Lisa Jivin, and Sophia Reuter, raised $5646.85.

Team JGHS Faculty Fights for a Cure raised $4998.09. Team members included Kris Kalinowski, Maris Paraszczuk and Nancy Pina.

Julia Hyacinthe, Kaitlyn Corazzata, Charles Hyacinthe, Claudia Hyacinthe, Melissa Loglisci, Victoria Ciccone, Catherine Devitt, Isabella Llano and Kaitlyn McGuckin, members of team Life Savers, came in third with $4352.

Top individual participants included Julia Hyacinthe ($3125), Alexandra Centeno-Rincon ($2078.26) and Kris Kalinowski ($1550).

Donations for both events are still being accepted at Elwood Relay for Life and Northport Relay for Life.
