Barnyard Helpers Keep Farm Clucking

Volunteers keep Lewis Oliver Farm a living, breathing Northport treasure.

I started my day at Lewis Oliver Farm by shoveling cow dung. I ended it sweaty, dirty and with a great appreciation for the volunteers who make this Northport non-profit run.

The Burt Ave. farm, which dates back to the 1800s, was jointly purchased by the Town of Huntington and Suffolk County in 2007.

Volunteer-based Friends of the Farm maintains the grounds and provides day-to-day care for the animals. That’s where I came in.

Centerport resident Valerie Sauer, a volunteer for five years, greeted me Friday morning and put me right to work. Watch her video.

Patch employees throughout the nation have taken time out this week to Give 5, a program that allows us to contribute to our communities by doing volunteer work.

Mine centered on cleaning coops, replacing wet and soiled wood chips and straw – as well as entertaining Annabelle the cow, who followed me around the yard in stalker fashion.

The animals are friendly and the work refreshing. I live in Northport Village, just a few blocks from the farm. You’d never know it existed unless you got lost and accidentally drove by.

It won’t continue to exist without donations and volunteer support.

Lewis Oliver Farm’s next fundraising event is Aug. 10 from 2-7 p.m. The Baryard Bash and Lobster Bake will feature live music, dessert bake off, pie eating contest, pony rides and face painting.
