Officials: Advisory Against Swimming at 66 Suffolk Beaches

Copiague Harbor Beach still closed.

Recent heavy rainfalls have prompted Suffolk County to issue an advisory against swimming at 66 beaches.

Find out which beaches are affected.

The advisory is based on the potential that storm-water runoff could trigger elevated bacteria levels, health officials said.

The beaches included in this advisory are in areas heavily influenced by storm-water runoff from surrounding watersheds, adjacent tributaries, or both. In addition, their locations are in enclosed embayments, and therefore experience limited tidal flushing, according to the county.

The advisory is expected to be lifted at 4 p.m. Thursday unless beach water samples indicate that the bacteria levels are still elevated.

Copiague Harbor Beach, which closed for the first time this season in May, remains closed to bathing because of elevated bacteria levels.
