Memorial Day Weekend Guide 2013

A guide to holiday events throughout the Town of Huntington.

Monday is Memorial Day, a federal holiday that serves as a day of remembering those who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Here is a list of parades and ceremonies happening around the area this holiday weekend and what you need to know if you'd like to attend.

Huntington YMCA Carnival
Friday through Monday at Huntington YMCA. See additional information here.

Memorial Day Wreath Ceremony
9:30 a.m. Sunday at Town Hall. As part of the annual Memorial Day Ceremony, wreaths will be placed at the World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, and Women’s Veteran Monuments and to honor troops serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Special guests will be Town of Huntington father and son veterans, who served simultaneously in the Middle East, US Army Cpl. Michael J. Schmitt Sr. and US Marine Sgt. Michael J. Schmit, Jr. The East Northport District Middle School Choral group will perform.

Huntington Parade
11:30 a.m. Monday. Starts at the Big H Center on New York Avenue and proceeds north to Main Street. Parade sponsored by Nathan Hale VFW Post 1469.

Northport Parade
10 a.m. Monday. The parade will begin at the Laurel Avenue School (William Brosnan Building) and proceed down Main Street to Village Park where there will be a wreath-laying ceremony. The parade is organized by Northport American Legion Post 694.

East Northport Parade
12:15 p.m. Monday. Starts at Clay Pitts and Larkfield Road at the IGA Market Center. The Northport High School Band will start at the Salvation Army Site on Clay Pitts Road, 1 block east of Larkfield. The parade will continue north on Larkfield Road to the John Walsh Memorial Park at East Northport Library where ceremonies will be performed. The parade is sponsored by the Fr. Judge Knights of Columbus.

Commack-Elwood Parade
10 a.m. Monday. The Commack-Elwood Memorial Day Parade starts at the Home Depot on Larkfield Road and proceeds east on Jericho Turnpike to the Veterans site at the intersection of Jericho and Veterans Memorial Highway. It is organized by the VFW Post 9263.
