Asharoken and Steers Beaches Closed Indefinitely

County says bacteria levels pose a risk to public health.

and are closed indefinitely due to unsafe levels of bacteria found in recent water samples, the Suffolk County Department of Health said Wednesday.

Enterococci was present in unacceptable levels at both beaches. The bacteria normally inhabit the intestinal tracts of humans and animals and may cause human disease, infections, or rashes.

The closures come on the heels of a county-issued for 22 Huntington Beaches Monday, including Steers and Ashaorken, after excessive runoff contamination following a heavy storm. The bathing bans were lifted on Tuesday.
