Northport Wrestling Notebook

The Tigers dropped matches vs. Whitman, Central Islip, and at Connetquot this week.

After a fourth-place finish at the Locust Valley Invitational last Saturday, the wrestling team suffered through an 0-3 week in League II dual-meet action. They lost at Whitman on Tuesday 37-35, at home against Central Islip on Thursday 45-21, and at Connetquot  Friday 57-13.

The Tigers are now 0-4 in League II play.

Heroes:
Despite Northport's recent struggles, senior captain Dan Romanczyk continues to win for the Tigers. After placing 1st at the 135-pound class in the Locust Valley Invitational last Saturday, Romanczyk was one of three Northport wrestlers to win all of his League II matches this week. He defeated Whitman's Henry Sweezy via technical fall at 135, and won via decision over Central Islip's Carlos Garcia (4-3, at 130) and over Connetquot's Steve Schmitt (8-0, at 135). He's now 19-1 on the season.

Also going 3-0 in his League II matches was senior heavyweight Jake Davenport. Davenport, who placed 2nd in the 285-pound class at the Locust Valley Invitational, won his matches against Whitman's Fati Harris and Central Islip's Jonathan Reyes via pin in the first round. He won against Connetquot by forfeit. Davenport is now 14-4 on the season.

Junior Vincent Sosa was the third Northport wrestler to go 3-0 this week, moving his record to 15-4. He beat Whitman's Nicholas Scover at with a pin in the first minute of their match at the 140-pound class. He followed that up with victories by decision  over Central Islip's Braulio Silverio (9-7, 135) and Connetquot's Kevin Blieka (4-3, 140). He placed 3rd at the Locust Valley Invitational last Saturday.

Devaney's Week:
Senior captain Donovan Devaney followed a 3rd place performance in the Locust Valley Invitational (he lost a 7-2 decision to Tom Gonzalez of Herricks High School in the 152-pound tournament) with a 2-1 week. Devaney, ranked 6th in Suffolk's Division I individual rankings (at 152), picked up pins of Whitman's Chris Olberding and Central Islip's Ryan Walsh, but fell 10-7 to Connetquot's Nick LoBue (ranked 3rd in Suffolk's Division I individual rankings at the 160-pound class). All of his matches this week were at the 160-pound class.

Other performances:
Senior Joe Klonowski placed 2nd in the 171-pound tournament at the Locust Valley Invitational, losing in the championship match to Locust Valley's Sam Cassella. He went 1-2 in League II competition this week, getting a pin over Whitman's Adam Doherty in the 2nd round (at 189) but losing to Central Islip's Julian Ming by 10-2 decision and to Connetquot's John Zullo by 2nd-round pin (both at 171).

Senior captain Matt Spiros placed 3rd at the Locust Valley Invitational in the 145-pound class, falling to Oyster Bay's Elton Gonzalez. He went 2-1 in League II action this week, all at the 145-pound class. He beat Whitman's Alberto Jurado (1-0) and Central Islip's Daniel Walsh (4-0) by decision, but lost to Connetquot's Mike Cella by a 7-2 decision.
