During Long Island Junior Soccer League games, it’s Northport resident Benjamin Schnell calling the shots.

Schnell, along with Claire Drotman of Commack, was recently named the Emrys Joseph Rookie Referee of the Year.

“Both Claire and Benjamin have done a terrific job! You want them refereeing your games or serving as your assistant referee as well,” Long Island Referee Association Executive Vice President John Sengelaub said in a press release.

The association serves the Long Island Junior Soccer League, covering 20,000 travel team soccer games in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Schnell was awarded the honor during the LISRA Holiday Party at the James E. Allen Elementary School in Dix Hills on Dec. 12, LISRA honored some of its top referees while making its annual donation to Toys for Tots.

“We all do what we can to help one another,” stated LISRA President Cathy Caldwell. “Our lives are definitely richer by working with one another.”
