Northport Football Beats Connetquot, 28-12

Tigers improve to 2-2 with road win over 2010 playoff team.

The  football team proved its 2010 playoff victory over Connetquot was no fluke. The Tigers defeated the T-Birds, 28-12, Saturday in a Division I game in Bohemia. The win evened the Tigers' record at 2-2.

Northport capitalized on winning the coin toss, opening the game with a methodical 15-play drive, eating up more than eight minutes of clock, punctuated by co-captain Ryan Kokell's 1-yard fourth-down touchdown plunge.

On the ensuing possession, senior Brian Wallace intercepted a Connetquot pass and galloped 60 yards for the score, registering his fourth touchdown of the season.

Seniors Greg Gueits and co-captain Stephen Carr added second half interceptions to help set up two more touchdown runs by Kokell, who now has a team-leading six for the season.

Matt Smith, a junior, converted four PATs to cap off Northport's scoring.

Junior quarterback Sean Gilroy continued his strong play, connecting on eight of his nine passing attempts for 80 yards. For the season, he has completed more than 66 percent of his attempts and is averaging more than 9 yards per attempt (499 yards on 53 attempts), including 4 touchdowns to 1 interception.

Sophomore Kenny Radigan leads the team with 12 catches, while senior Brian Wallace, in his first year as a starter, has 3 touchdown receptions and a team-high 172 yards from the wingback position.

Northport will host defending Suffolk Division I champion Floyd on Thursday at 3:30 pm.

The team does not release statistics on tackles. Four Tigers have interceptions: Brett Hall, Brian Wallace, Greg Gueits and Stephen Carr

The number that stands out to me is 102. That's the number of points allowed by the Tigers, which ranks ninth in Division I. The best defense is surprising 4-0 Sachem East at 33 points. The worst is 0-4 Central Islip at 132.
