Updated: 5 Glenn, 2 Northport Wrestlers Advance to Semifinals

Knights have one of the top teams in Suffolk through first day of county finals.

sits in second place in total points after one day of the Division I Suffolk County wrestling championships at Stony Brook University.

The Knights will have five wrestlers competing in the semifinals Monday, including James Dekrone (130 pounds), Kenny Mensen (135), Kevin Massa (160), Nick Bellanza (160) and Joe Giarmitta (189).

“Our guys came out and wrestled tough,” said Glenn coach T.J. Brocking.

Bellanza and Massa could face each other in the finals with another win apiece.

Vinny Punzone (119) lost in the second round, while Nick Principotta (140) and Luke Prohaske (171) made first round exits.

Sam Richman lost in the first round, but advanced to the lower wrestle back bracket before eventually being eliminated. The same happened to Bryan Shankman at 185.

Romanczyk advances for NorthportDan Romanczyk is only wrestler still alive in the tournament. He’ll wrestle Monday in the 135-pound semifinals.

Vina Sosa (140) lost to Mt. Sinai’s Eric Kogel in the first round. Donovan Devaney lost in the second round at 160 to Longwood's Pat Jennings, then beat Smithtown East's Nick Oliveri in the wrestle back bracket. He will face Smithtown West's Joe Napi Monday as he tries to go the distance and place third in the county.

Matt Spiros lost at 145 in the first round and then was eliminated in wrestle backs. Kevin Gallagher was eliminated in the second round at 103.
