East Northport Volleyball Player Honored at MSG

Stony Brook University sophomore honored for athletic achievements.

Melissa Rigo, an East Northport resident, on Stony Brook University's volleyball team, was honored at Madison Square Garden Saturday after she was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Player of the Week in September.

The ECAC honored student athletes who earned weekly accolades during the 2013 fall sports season throughout the second game of the Holiday Festival, featuring St. John's and Fordham

Rigo recorded double-doubles in all three matches at the Bryant Invitational Sept. 20-21, helping the Seawolves secure wins against Bryant and Princeton. She averaged 3.33 kills and 3.67 digs while hitting an efficient .358 for the weekend on her way to all-tournament and her first of two America East Player of the Week honors for the 2013 season according to a University press release.

A sophomore, she finished second on the team in double-doubles (13), kills (2.69) and digs (2.84) in 2013. A business major, Rigo was named to the conference's All-Academic team for her work on the court and in the classroom.
