Tell Us: Making Up Class Time in Oyster Bay

What do you think of the decision to do away with February break?

Like many district across Long Island, Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District has created a plan to adjust the academic calendar to make up for lost instruction days after Hurricane Sandy.

The district announced Nov. 21 that the vacation scheduled for Feb. 19-22 would be canceled and that President's Day on Feb. 18 would be changed to a snow makeup day in case of additional closings. Schools also announced several other days that would be next in line if more days would be needed for instruction. Check out the full rundown here.

I think thery should just do 2 periods after school every day since the buildings are already open it will save the huge run cost for that extra week and the classes could be made up in 9 days all vacations left intact just a thought

Thanks for the thoughts, plainview lifer. February break has been the main choice for districts who have to make up days post-Sandy. Is there a different time of the year the days could be made up?

As an OBENer, I totally agree with the Board's decision. There are just too many after school programs to add to a school day. It would require changing sport's schedules across the county...just not doable. And, which classes do you run on what days? The students need to make up class time, not just days....and the hours I don't think calculate to the days the state requires.
