State Aid Restored to Northport Schools

Northport, Elwood see increases in final state aid numbers released last week.

State aid has been restored to Northport School District, according to final numbers released by the State late last week.

Northport will see a $176,000 increase in aid for 2013-2014, as opposed to a $501,926 decrease proposed in preliminary numbers in January. The increase comes primarily from a restoration of high tax aid to $735,742, the same amount given in 2012-2013.

The total difference between aid numbers proposed by Governor Andrew Cuomo in January and the final numbers within the enacted budget is $703,626. The change represents a 1.50 percent increase overall.

The Northport School District is expected to discuss how the final state aid numbers will affect the proposed budget at their April 8 meeting.

Elwood School District also saw an increase in state aid according to the final state aid numbers.

Initially slated for a $227,662 increase, Elwood schools will now receive  $613,287 more than in 2012-2013. The highest aid increase for Elwood was in BOCES and special education in the amount of $1,008,263, a $385,367 increase from 2012-2013.

Elwood's final state aid numbers represent a 5.35 percent increase overall.
