Northport Welcomes New Social Studies Chair

Melissa O'Malia previously served as social studies chair at Levittown Schools.

Melissa O'Malia, previously of Levittown schools, has been appointed by the Board of Education as the new social studies department chair for Northport-East Northport schools.

O'Malia was the social sudies chairperson in Levittown schools for six years and a teacher there since 2000. She is also an attorney and said on Monday that she loves the Northport PATCH law program.

O'Malia said she would like to improve literacy and current events awareness in accordance with the new , an ambitious set of requirements designed to ensure that students are college- and career-ready.

"I would like to have a reading list," she said. "I would also like to see more kids reading on their own and making suggestions."
