Northport Schools Notebook: Energy Performance Contract, Accolades

A roundup of items discussed at the March 5 Northport Board of Ed meeting.

Student Achievements

Matthew and Benjamin Allen were recognized as the Music Department Students of the Month.  The brothers have been selected for the SCMEA/NYSCAME All-County Festivals for band and orchestra every year since the 5th grade. They have both received a score of A+ NYSSMA Solos, the highestscore for the most difficult level, every year since the eighth grade. Matt and Ben were both selected for All-State last year where Matt was the principle trumpet in the All-State Symphonic Band and Ben the principle trombone in the All-State Symphony Orchestra, which are the highest seats possible in their respective instruments.

Brittany Byrne was recognized as the Technology Department Student of the Month. As a member of the National Honor Society and Tech Honor Society she played an integral role in creating a building blocks castle for the Child Ed. Department at the High School and also built a memorial sitting area in honor of science teacher David Deutsch.

Special Award for Trustee Lori McCue

Board President Stephen Waldenburg presented Trustee Lori McCue with a special Achievement Award from the New York State School Boards Association for her efforts in initiating an amendment to Suffolk County Tax Bill A03911 regarding the schedule for the collection of school taxes within the county. The proposal .

Only Suffolk County is required to send such tax bills in December, which
results in the need for extensive short-term borrowing by school districts in
the form of tax anticipation notes (TANs).

Board Approves Exploratory Search for an Energy Performance Contract

The Board approved a motion by Trustee McCue for ECG Engineering to begin the RFP process for an Energy Performance Contract on behalf of the school district. McCue said the district would not be under any obligation or incur any expense at this point.

The Operations and Maintenance Committee had urged the district to look into an Energy Performance Contract in its Five Year Plan, which was discussed at the . Potential savings from an EPC could total approximately $5.5 million for electrical updates at all the buildings and boiler replacements in six buildings.
