Northport Schools Seek New Principals, Math Chair

Retirements leave three positions open.

The is looking to fill the big shoes of three employees retiring this year, according to a recent job ad posted in the New York Times.

Positions are available for Principal, Dickinson Avenue Elementary Principal, and District Mathematics Department Chair starting in July 2012.

The ad specifies highly-qualified individuals who possess expertise in all aspects of middle, elementary, or secondary school education (depending on the position applied for) and comprehensive knowledge of current NYS Common Core standards and assessments, with teaching experience in their respective subjects and good communication and leadership skills.

Principal Anne Whooley, whose salary was $163,490 in 2011 according to SeeThroughNY, is retiring after 30 years with the district. Joanne Kroon, Principal of East Northport Middle, is retiring after 29 years with the district, and District Chairperson of Mathematics Daniel Drance is retiring after five years with the district.

"It was a very fast five years," said Drance. "I was very pleased with some of the technological advancements we've ushered in, we've made curriculum more uniform in the secondary level, and we're beginning to usher in a new curriculum with the common core state standards."

Drance added that student participation in extracurricular math activities has "skyrocketed" in the last few years with the multiple County-wide competition winners.
